Show the current Taskhold task in your Starship prompt

By Jake Marsh, who builds Taskhold. Updated 2026-10-26. Facts about other tools checked 2026-10-26. 1 min read.

Starship custom modules run a command and print its output in the prompt. With taskhold-mcp statusline as the command, every prompt shows the task an agent is on and how far along it is, the line the live board would give you, in any shell and any terminal, including ones with no status bar such as Ghostty.

For a bar that updates on its own, see tmux or WezTerm. In Claude Code itself, use the status line recipe.

Set it up

  1. Install the Taskhold CLI and save your key.
  2. Add the module to ~/.config/starship.toml.
curl -fsSL https://taskhold.com/install.sh | sh
taskhold-mcp login
[custom.taskhold]
command = "~/.taskhold/bin/taskhold-mcp statusline"
when = true
format = "[$output]($style) "
style = "blue"
ignore_timeout = true

One limit to know

Starship runs the module on every prompt and has no refresh interval of its own. Taskhold's CLI caches its answer for 10 seconds, so most prompts are instant, but a prompt after a quiet spell waits for one fetch (up to 2.5 seconds). Drop ignore_timeout if you'd rather skip the module than wait: Starship's default command_timeout of 500 ms then hides it on a slow fetch.
