Taskhold in tmux

By Jake Marsh, who builds Taskhold. Updated 2026-10-26. Facts about other tools checked 2026-10-26. 1 min read.

If your agents run in tmux panes, tmux can show what they are working on in two ways: the current task in the status bar, and the whole live board in a pane of its own that redraws when anything changes.

Runners built on tmux, such as Claude Squad, work the same way. For several agents on one list, see running several agents.

Status bar

Install the Taskhold CLI, then add three lines to ~/.tmux.conf and reload it (tmux source-file ~/.tmux.conf):

curl -fsSL https://taskhold.com/install.sh | sh
taskhold-mcp login
set -g status-interval 10
set -g status-right-length 90
set -g status-right '#(~/.taskhold/bin/taskhold-mcp statusline)'
status-right-length defaults to 40, which cuts the line short.

A live board pane

taskhold-mcp watch draws the live board in a terminal and redraws from the event stream: tasks in progress with their bars, blocked questions, recent changes. Split a pane and run it:

tmux split-window -h -l 60 'taskhold-mcp watch'

One limit to know

tmux never waits for a #() command; it shows the previous result and runs the command again in the background. The status bar can lag one interval behind, up to 10 seconds with the settings above. The watch pane follows the event stream and updates within a second or two.
