A shared task list for Claude Code
Claude Code keeps its own todo list for the current session. When the session ends or the context resets, that list is gone, and you can't see it from your phone.
Taskhold is a hosted task list that you and Claude Code both use. You add and reorder tasks in the web app. Claude Code reads the same list through MCP tools, starts a task, leaves notes, blocks it with a reason when it needs you, and completes it with a summary. Every change is marked as made by you or by an agent.
Setup in one paste
- Start the 7-day trial and open Settings. Click to make a setup URL. It looks like https://taskhold.com/setup/<token>.md and expires after 3 days.
- Paste it into your agent with the words "set this up". The agent fetches the markdown, which contains a fresh API key, the config for its own client and the task workflow snippet.
- The agent adds the server, then calls taskhold_list to check it works. Settings shows "Connected" when the first call arrives.
If you'd rather add it yourself, this is the command the setup file gives Claude Code. It registers a remote (Streamable HTTP) server for your user, so every project sees it:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user taskhold https://taskhold.com/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <your atd_sk_ key>"Tell Claude Code how to use the list
Add this to the project's CLAUDE.md (or your user-level ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md to use it everywhere). The setup file includes it:
## Tasks (Taskhold)
The human and I share a task list through the taskhold MCP tools.
- Session start: taskhold_get_current; if nothing is in progress, taskhold_list status:todo and take the highest priority.
- taskhold_start before working on a task; taskhold_add_note as you go.
- Can't continue? taskhold_block with the reason. Done? taskhold_complete with a short summary.
- Found a TODO or a bug you aren't fixing now? taskhold_create (or taskhold_create_from_todo with file and line). With that in place, starting a session with "work on the next task" is enough. Claude Code checks for a task in progress first, then takes the highest-priority todo.
What Claude Code can do with it
- taskhold_get_current: what is already in progress, so a new session picks up where the last one stopped.
- taskhold_list and taskhold_start: take the highest-priority todo and mark it in progress, so a second agent skips it.
- taskhold_add_note: leave notes on the task as work goes, visible in the web app.
- taskhold_block: stop with a reason. The task shows as blocked on you in Agent Activity.
- taskhold_complete: finish with a short summary of what changed.
- taskhold_create and taskhold_create_from_todo: file new tasks, including a TODO with its file path and line number.
Why not the built-in todo list or a TODO.md
- The built-in todo list is scoped to one session. Taskhold's list outlives sessions, machines and context resets.
- A TODO.md in the repo works, but you have to open the repo to read it, and two sessions editing it at once can step on each other. Taskhold is one list you read from any browser, with history.
- If a plain file is enough for you, keep using it. Taskhold is for when you want to queue work from anywhere and see what the agent did while you were away.
Give your agents a list you can both see.

Start your 7-day trialQuestions
- Does Taskhold read my code?
- No. Claude Code sends only the task text, notes, file paths and line numbers it chooses. Taskhold never connects to your repository and makes no AI model calls with your data.
- Do I need to install anything?
- No. Claude Code connects to the remote server at https://taskhold.com/api/mcp directly. Nothing to install.
- Can several Claude Code sessions share one list?
- Yes. Each session sees tasks already in progress, so a second session takes the next todo instead of the same one.
- What does it cost?
- $12 a month or $120 a year per person, after a 7-day trial that starts with a card. Cancel before the trial ends and nothing is charged.
