Taskhold vs Taskmaster AI

Taskmaster AI (claude-task-master) is a free, widely used CLI and MCP server. It parses a product requirements document into tasks with dependencies and complexity estimates, stored in a .taskmaster/ folder in the project. Its hosted companion, Hamster, adds team sync on paid plans.

Taskhold doesn't plan for you. It's a hosted list where you write tasks and agents work through them, report back and file new ones.

Pick Taskmaster if

  • You start projects from a PRD and want the agent to break it into dependent tasks.
  • You want everything in the repo and free.
  • You're one repo at a time.

Pick Taskhold if

  • You write tasks yourself, as they come up, across several repos.
  • You want to add and review tasks from a browser or phone.
  • You want blocked tasks and agent summaries in one place, with agent changes marked as such.
  • You don't want to manage model API keys for the task tool.

Give your agents a list you can both see.

Questions

Can I use both?
Yes. Some people plan with Taskmaster inside a repo and keep the cross-project backlog in Taskhold.
