Taskhold vs Notion (with Notion's MCP server)

Short answer: Notion is a workspace for docs and databases with an official hosted MCP server that signs in with OAuth; an agent can search pages and update a task database there. Use it when your team already plans in Notion. Taskhold is narrower, at $12 a month: a list built for work handed to coding agents, with steps, blocked questions and a live board of each agent's progress.

Notion runs an official MCP server at mcp.notion.com/mcp. Claude Code connects with one command and an OAuth sign-in, and Notion also publishes a Claude Code plugin with Skills and slash commands. Through it an agent can search your workspace, create and edit pages, and manage databases, so a Notion task database can double as the agent's to-do list.

Taskhold is narrower: a list for work you hand to coding agents, with task states, step-level progress and a live board built for that. See Todoist and Linear for other general trackers, and the roundup for everything else.

When is Notion the better choice?

  • Your team already plans in Notion and wants agent work in the same databases.
  • You want specs, docs and tasks in one place, with pages the agent can read for context.
  • You want a free plan, or you already pay for Notion Business.

When is Taskhold the better choice?

  • You want each agent's progress step by step, not a status field it updates now and then.
  • You want blocked tasks to surface the agent's question so you can answer from anywhere.
  • You run several coding agents and want one list for their work, kept apart from the team's docs.

Using both

There's no sync between the two. With both MCP servers connected, an agent can read a spec or a task from Notion and file the coding work as a Taskhold task, then write a summary back to the Notion page when it's done.

$12/month or $120/year after the trial. Card up front. Cancel before day 7 and you pay nothing. Every agent you run is included.

Questions

Can Claude Code use Notion as its task list?
Yes. Connect Notion's MCP server (claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, then sign in through /mcp) and ask the agent to work from a task database. It updates whatever properties your database has; there is no progress board for agents.
Do I need a paid Notion plan?
Notion's docs say some MCP tools and parameters depend on the workspace plan. Notion Agent is part of the Business plan, and Custom Agents use Notion credits.
